"Tricoter literally means to knit. And a tricotin , bridle or needle spool is a hollow wooden tube, often in the shape of a nice figure, with four pins at the top. Around those pins and with the help of a crochet hook you knit a long hollow strand that goes through the tube slides. 'Les Tricotins' is also the title of an anonymous lute piece that appears in several tablature books: childlike, simple and pure. Usually flanked by ' Le gris de lin ', a piece in much the same atmosphere, the title of which refers to the beautiful blue-gray color of the flax flower. With Les Tricotins we are clearly in the textile sector, where weaving, spun, knitting or sewing take place. But according to the dictionary, tricotin also simply means 'phallus'…"
